about

US Cuba Artist Exchange (USCAE) is extremely proud to present AmeriCuba Project's Mamá me lo dijo, a musical collaboration between 20 plus Cuban and US hip-hop artists ranging from emerging to legendary in status. Each musician in the collective brings their own unique personality and style to the project making this one of the most dynamic and powerful afro-latino-hip-hop inspired musical experiences of 2017.

The members of AmeriCuba united in Havana, Cuba in late 2016 with the intent of creating a cross-cultural collaboration using hip-hop culture as the unifier. The recording process was unexpectedly halted after 3 days due to the passing of Fidel Castro. Following Castro’s death the government banned any entertainment, music or otherwise, and any sale or consumption of alcohol for 9 full days while Fidel’s ashes were transported from Havana to Santiago de Cuba, the birthplace of the revolution. The new album, Mamá me lo dijo, consists of 9 songs that represent the 9 days of luto (Spanish for mourning) that AmeriCuba experienced during this historical period of time in Cuba. To our knowledge Mamá me lo dijo was the only album recorded during this 9 day period.

Whether or not you speak Spanish, agree or disagree with American or Cuban politics, or know anything about Cuban history, the music of the AmeriCuba Project is meant to keep heads nodding, feet tapping and bodies moving while eliciting social intellect and inspiring conversation. The tracks included on Mama me lo dijo capture the organic, vivacious and bustling grooves of Central Havana and the sunny, soulful sounds of Santiago de Cuba mixed with a touch of the Minneapolis hip-hop sound.

In light of the US Governments renewal on travel and economic restrictions between the US and Cuba the need for artist exchange to continue to build connections between the people of our countries has become increasingly important. The USCAE will continue to work towards intercambio between our two countries regardless of politic agendas that keep us from fostering deeper relationships.
